Overview

Over 18 months I led engineering for Bldg Blox: a neighbourhood platform for residents, institutions, developers, and local organisations. The production collaboration app sat alongside exploratory work on contribution-based stake and governance.

Venture thesis

A neighbourhood token network that recognises contributions as stake, gives residents a say in local governance, and makes project progress and value easier to follow.

Field notes

  • Built the Nuxt, Vuex, and Firebase product: project discovery, profiles, posts, comments, calls to action, notifications, and member workflows.
  • Designed permissions for open, limited, and admin-managed projects, with realtime state maintained by Firebase rules and Cloud Functions.
  • Adapted the app for COVID-19 relief, bringing food, medical supplies, volunteering, employment, grants, and mutual aid into one workflow.
  • An exploratory prototype combined engagement, finance, and collaboration signals and wrote a checkpoint to EOS. The token layer remained separate from the production app.
  • The idea drew on earlier work: STEEM Park raised over $20K, while the precursor SNDBOX ecosystem supported 150 projects and distributed more than $400K in cryptocurrency.
