Overview

From December 2017 to December 2018 I used Steem as a shared identity, publishing, and reward layer for a sustained run of open-source products. Rapid API experiments converged into the Finally platform, surrounded by community applications, desktop utilities, boilerplates, and public tutorials.

Field notes

The dedicated code-with-sam archive contains 31 repositories from the year, at least 26 clearly Steem-related. Finally Comments became the flagship: 311 commits, an npm embed SDK, a WordPress plugin, and a public issue-driven roadmap.
Finally Comments joined SteemConnect OAuth, signed comments and weighted votes, beneficiary reward splits, responsive cross-domain iframes, and one-click thread generation. Guest posting introduced off-chain data and abuse controls, so moderation had to preserve nested thread continuity while respecting immutable on-chain authorship.
When SteemConnect stopped allowing login inside an iframe, the authentication flow moved to a popup and cross-window message path. Other releases addressed duplicated replies, inaccurate tree counts, mixed guest/on-chain sorting, domain authorization, and owner-only moderation.
Finally Network turned any Steem account into an independent themed site. Six themes covered photography, long-form writing, minimal technical blogs, video, and portfolio use; a shared core later replaced duplicated theme logic while hashtag navigation, resteems, and collaborative authoring expanded the model.
GoodBook.Reviews, Move Club, and Photofeed.club tested specialised community products instead of another generic feed. They encoded ISBNs, ratings, workout duration, distance, and featured-photographer data alongside blockchain posts, then wrapped that shared content in purpose-built discovery and contribution flows.
Steem Notifier streamed block operations into native Electron alerts for votes, mentions, transfers, follows, reblogs, and rewards, including sleep/resume recovery. The SteemConnect boilerplate and bot/DSteem tutorial series turned the same learning into reusable infrastructure for other developers.
The year also produced a useful product lesson: the embeddable-plugin audience was small, competing site builders emerged, and not every vertical gained enough from a blockchain. I narrowed Finally toward integrations and collaborations, removed a low-value payment gate, and doubled down on tutorials—the work showing the clearest community demand.
